THERE IS / THERE ARE

RULES:

1. Use there IS for singular nouns (one item).
"There is a spider on the wall."


2. Use there IS for non-countable items(group nouns).
"There is milk on the floor."


3. Use there ARE for many items (plural nouns).
"There are pencils on my desk."
